Procedure
How automatic renewal works
Automatic renewals are done with Symphony reports and do not require any action by patrons or staff.
Symphony will renew eligible items 3 days before the due date. If items don’t renew, a 3-day reminder notice will be sent to most patrons. Reminder notices cannot be sent by mail.
If an item can’t be renewed 3 days before the due date, Symphony will keep trying to renew that item until the day before it is billed.
Items will be renewed for the loan period that matches their user profile, usually 3 or 6 weeks.
Items will be automatically renewed up to 50 times. These 50 renewals include all types of renewals -- automatic, by patrons, or by staff.
Patrons and staff can renew eligible items at any time, including renewing items the full 50 renewals.
Auto renew will follow standard renewal policies
Items with outstanding holds, Interlibrary Loan items, Special Loans of reference materials, Tech Lending, items that have been renewed 50 times, or items that are already billed will not be automatically renewed.
Items checked out to Accommodation users A_1 _ITEM, A_5 _ITEM, excluded patrons, and Administrative/staff accounts are not automatically renewed.
Patrons may contact us to request an Interlibrary Loan renewal. Some lending libraries allow one renewal.
How patrons can opt out of automatic renewal
Patrons who want to manage their own due dates and renewals can ask staff to opt out of auto renew.
Staff will enter an “N” in the AUTORENEW field in the Extended Info tab.
Patrons may change this setting at any time.

Rationale
Automatic renewal gives every patron the same level of service for 50 renewals.
Auto renew bypasses barriers such as access to (and skill with) technology, time management, memory, communication, and more. Patrons don’t have to ask for renewals or know that renewals are possible.
