Collection storage and retrieval

Archival periodical collections

All magazines and journals published in 2017 or before are archived at a long term storage facility managed by Iron Mountain. This includes the United States Congressional Serial Set and all active and ceased magazines and journals. Bound newspapers are currently being transitioned to storage.

A new shelving location has been added to Symphony to identify materials in long term storage. In Symphony these materials are assigned to ISM with a location of STORAGE-IM. In MyMCL, you will see the following displayed when you select “Availability by Location.”

For active titles that are split between two locations (e.g., Central and Iron Mountain) records have not been updated, but issues published in 2017 or earlier are now in storage.

Item retrieval

Retrieval of materials stored at Iron Mountain can be requested through this form.(link is external)

Receiving and returning stored items

Items retrieved from Iron Mountain will include a card with a barcode. Please keep this card with the item so that it can easily be refiled. Archival materials are for in-library use only. When a patron has finished viewing an item, please return the item to OPS via interoffice mail to Comm Info/OPS.

Check in the returned item(s) using the Receive Transit Wizard. Storage items should not be checked in using IMMS.

If you are unable to identify the current location of an item or have questions about stored materials, please email libstorage@multco.us for support.
