MCL provides services to the incarcerated youth at Donald E Long juvenile detention center (DEL). Juvenile Justice is a part of the county's Department of Criminal Justice. MCL provides youth with opportunities to engage with recreational and educational reading materials via a deposit collection and book talks.
We partner with DEL to engage with youth in the detention center library following an adapted restorative justice model. Youth apply, are interviewed, and are trained to be official library volunteers. They assist in maintaining their onsite library and receive volunteer hours for participating in the program.
Goals:
- Provide youth with ways to directly engage with their facility library
- Offer skill-building and resumé building opportunities for youth
- Regular, ongoing maintenance and attention to the library space and resources
- Foster community and connection within DEL
- Offer opportunities for restorative justice and restitution for youth
