Length of exclusions

Patrons who fail to comply with the Multnomah County Library rules may be excluded from library premises. When a library patron violates the rules and exclusion is warranted, they are issued an exclusion notice that explains which rule(s) have been violated and the length of the exclusion. The library rules set out the period of exclusion that will be imposed for various violations, usually expressed as a range of time. The goal of these guidelines is to help library staff members and security personnel be consistent in setting exclusion lengths.

If a patron trespasses while excluded, and violates an additional rule, their exclusion might be extended by the Incident Review Team and/or renewed by the Director’s Office.

If a library employee has questions about an exclusion length or believes an exclusion length should be modified, they should notify the Incident Review Team at library-security-review-team@multco.us

Adults

General Guidelines

  • No exclusion will be longer than three years without prior approval from the Director’s Office.
  • See the exclusion progression chart
