Training for YS

The following is a list of all youth related workshops developed by Multnomah County Library and for whom it's aimed.  Please contact Hesther Thurman with questions or corrections.

Mandatory Workshops

Youth Librarian (YL) Orientation

Think Yes! with Teens

  • In this interactive training, staff will learn:
    • How teen development and needs influence behavior
    • How teens are involved at our libraries
    • Best practices for working effectively with teens, including scenarios for dealing with challenging situations

Storytime Training

  • This certification process teaches staff how to conduct dvelopmentally appropriate storytimes.  Participants attend several workshops, intern with a mentor and demonstrate the skill in order to be certified by the Every Child Initiative Supervisor.

Youth Resources

  •  This class is for all new reference staff. It highlights important resources useful for working with children and their caregivers with an emphasis on electronic resources. Learn some catalog tips along with highlights of the KidsPage, Homework Center, and databases. Print resources and brief information on working with children are shared as well.

  • How to create official booklists.

Optional Workshops

Selling It the Stacks: Readers Advisory to Teens

  • What are teens reading today and how can you help them find it?  In this class you will hear about great new teen books, learn how to make your interactions with teens more productive, and learn about good readers' advisory resources. You'll practice "selling" books to each other and increase your knowledge of young adult literature.

Rescue Reference Videos

  • Rescue Reference was developed in Oct. 2012 by the Reference Training Team and Learning Systems.  Each video covers a specific reference skill or tool including reference interview with kids. Log into Workday, go to Learning and search for Rescue Reference.

What Do Kids Want to Read? 

  • Kids Readers Advisory & Best Books - Explore reading preferences of elementary school youth, survey a variety of popular classic and great new books, and examine library resources that help staff provide reading guidance. You will also learn how to determine a book's reading level and how to work with beginning readers. Participants will have the opportunity to practice "selling" a book as well.

Sensory Storytime

  • Provides an overview of and techniques for working with developmentally challenged children in a storytime setting

  • Teaches YL/CL/TLs how to mentor newer librarians.

  • Provides information about how to facilitate YS meetings.

How Do Children Learn to Read? A Welcome to Reading Online Training

  • In order to effectively help students, parents, and teachers, library staff need an understanding of how children learn to read. This course covers the philosophy, mechanics, and typical path of reading acquisition for the majority of young people. This training will help staff make greater connections between the library's collection and programs with young students.
  • For: All Information Services staff, especially Youth Services and anyone who works with youth and parents.
