Separate violations of the behavior rules by a single patron can result in a longer exclusion in the following scenarios.
- Multiple violations
If an individual is violating multiple behavior rules before being notified of an exclusion, PICs and security personnel should apply the duration that applies to the greatest violation (e.g. one year for a direct threat of physical harm) rather than add the exclusion lengths for all lesser violations (creating unreasonable noise, interfering with free passage, repeatedly disobeying the reasonable direction of a staff member, etc.).
- Using the progression during an exclusion
After notifying the patron of an exclusion, it is appropriate for PICs and security personnel to use the standard exclusion progression if the patron is refusing to leave. If the patron has agreed to leave and is exiting the building, staff should not issue additional exclusions punitively for minor violations. However, if the violations include any serious or threatening behavior, the Incident review team will consider extending the exclusion upon review.
- Using the progression after an exclusion
PICs and security personnel should continue to use the applicable exclusion progression after an initial exclusion only when subsequent exclusions occur during the probationary period outlined in the chart below.
| Length of exclusion | Probationary period |
|---|---|
| 3 months or less | 3 months |
| 6 months | 6 months |
| 1 year or more | 1 year |
Please note: the probationary period begins on the day the exclusion expires.
