Tutoring for adults learning to read

Adults learning to read

The Basic Literacy tutoring program offers one-on-one tutoring to adults, mostly native English speakers, who are learning to read in English, helping them develop foundational reading skills. Trained tutors work one-one-one or small groups of adults, basing their approach to the goals of the learner. We currently host this program at the Midland Library.

The program refers learners to the Language and Literacy Fund, Portland Literacy Council, PCC, Mt Hood and Clackamas Community Colleges and other state, community and local partners, if we don’t have capacity.

Spanish literacy tutoring

Our library adult basic education programs focus on helping adults re-engage in their education. It offers one-on-one tutoring to help adults achieve their learning goals; from helping a parent read a child’s notes from school, or a job seeker to read employment ads. We currently host one-on-one tutoring to Spanish speakers at the Gresham Library. The program is made possible through Mexico’s National Institute for Adult Education (INEA) learning materials. This is a volunteer-led program.
