Cleaning practices and product substitutions

Supply orderers are now encouraged to use the shared Library Favorites folders in Multco Marketplace (MMP) to find the best green and most affordable supplies.

All-purpose

  • Vinegar - Each location has at least one labeled spray bottle, a gallon jug of vinegar and cheesecloth.  Staff member mixes one part vinegar to one part  tap water in the spray bottles for cleaning (see recommended uses below).  Order cheesecloth and vinegar (in gallon jugs) from Library supplies form on LibCommons.
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) - This product is no longer in use as a cleaning agent.
  • Citrisolv - You can also have some of this concentrated or diluted cleaner at your location.  It can be used instead of Murphy's wipes for cleaning wood, or as a general surface/book cleaner. Order from Library supplies form.
  • Seventh Generation Disinfecting Spray or Wipes or Pure Green 24- Use one of these products to disinfect, depending on surface.  NEVER spray anything directly on computers or keyboards.

Cleaning of specific items

  • Toys: use Seventh Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner or wipes:  please see important guidelinesPure Green 24, or isopropanol alcohol.
  • Keyboards - Alternatives to canned air include forced-air squeeze bulb "Rockets", turning over and tapping, brushing out debris with a small clean paint brush, or vacuuming  out debris. To disinfect keyboards, use cheesecloth sprayed with Seventh Generation Multi-Surface Cleaner and Disinfecting Spray or Seventh Generation Disinfecting Wipes.
  • Computer screens - microfiber cloth or cheesecloth (dry or moistened), 50/50 isopropyl alcohol/water(NEVER spray any liquids)
  • Hard surfaces such as tables and counters:cheesecloth with vinegar solution (do not use vinegar on marble)
  • Whiteboards:  Use vinegar and water mixture (50/50), or Pure Green 24.
  • Book covers:  Citrisolv, Seventh Generation spray or vinegar solution
  • Adhesive removal:  Vinegar solution, or Citrisolv (full strength) with cheesecloth
  • Dishes:  Seventh Generation Dish Soap

Product substitutions

Cleaning screens and glass 

  • Use: isopropyl alcohol/water - 50/50 mixture
  • Instead of: Windex

General cleaning - books, counters, desks, etc.

Adhesive removal

  • Use: Citrisolv - not diluted
  • Instead of: Un-Du, "Adhesive remover"

Lubricating book cart wheels,shredders

  • Use: Bio-lubricant
  • Instead of: WD-40, Paper Shredder oil

Cleaning/disinfecting toys

Washing dishes

  • Use: ECOS PRO Dishmate Liquid Dish Soap
  • Instead of: Palmolive, Joy, etc.
