September 2025
Quick Facts:
- All locations have an area to display new fiction and nonfiction books.
- Books from the current year are chosen for the new book display from items to be shelved. Some locations (CEN and HDL) use the AMH to sort books with the current year in their call number to a transport unit.
- Symphony will show an accurate New Books location in the Placement field:
Placement: Gregory Heights/Lucky Day & Display/Bay 014 Display, Adult New Books - Bibliocommons does not show display and exhibition locations, and will show new books at their default location (Fiction, Mystery, etc). Expect patron questions about this, especially for titles published this year that have been in the collection for 6 months or longer.
Procedure:
Use the IMMS device to “Move to shelf”. The first step is to "scan the location being moved to", which is the RFID location tag attached to the New book display area.
Next, scan the items to go onto the New Books display.
If new items are linked to a transport unit, you may scan the RFID tag for that transport unit to move the entire batch.
If the new books are not linked to a transport unit, you will need to move them to the shelf individually by scanning each item.
BEWARE:
Do not use the “Shelve items” option when adding to the new books display.
“Shelve items” is never used for holds, displays, or exhibitions, even if items have been attached to a transport unit.
Use “Move to Shelf” instead.
For how long is a book new?
- For books and other materials that were acquired by the library in the last 90 days, IMMS strategy is to distribute them evenly throughout locations. In the first 90 days after an item is added, you will get more than one copy at your branch only if the system owns more copies than there are open branches, and if there are no holds on the title.
- After 90 days have passed, items from the current publication year are not evenly distributed, and may have duplicates at your branch, even though other locations have no copies of that title.
Future New book exhibitions:
Soon, selectors will begin using the exhibitions feature of IMMS to direct new books to locations. Books arriving at locations should be directed to the Exhibitions Transport Unit, and then can be moved to shelf as a unit, or with the “Shelve items in exhibition” option on the IMMS device.
Rationale:
- Patrons enjoy browsing new books.
- New materials need to be moved to display spaces with the IMMS device so that their placement location in Symphony is correct.
