First Aid kits

Policy

Each agency is required to maintain a fully stocked, easily accessible first aid kit.

Procedure

The supervisor or manager of each section, branch, or other library location is responsible for seeing that a first aid kit is available and fully stocked with unexpired products.

A first aid kit is available in each work location (scroll down to view Locations of First Aid Kits).

Per OSHA requirements, a green cross, list of staff with recent first aid training, and Emergency Medical Plan is posted near each first aid kit (scroll down to view Emergency Medical Plan).

A list of required contents is included in each first aid kit (scroll down to view First Aid Supplies).  Locations may choose to stock extra quantities of frequently used items such as adhesive bandages.  They may also choose to stock only commonly needed first aid supplies at public service points instead of a full kit, as long as there is a least one full kit in the location.  Most first aid supplies for restocking used or expired supplies can be ordered through Multco Marketplace. Contact Grant Swanson for items that need to be ordered from McKesson.

The Safety Committee for each building is responsible for updating the kit(s) when new supplies are determined by Support Services to be needed. The committees will work with the Purchasing Specialist to order and distribute an initial supply of any new products to be added to the first aid kits.  Safety Committee members may be requested to do monthly inventories on the kits, however all staff are responsible for reporting when they notice supplies of any specific product, e.g adhesive bandages, are depleted.

We have this guide to help you find what you need there. The quantity of items can adjusted for your locations size and usage pattern, but at a minimum should contain the items listed below,  This fulfills the Multnomah County Risk Management and OR-OSHA requirements for first aid supplies.

  • One (1) box (25 quantity) adhesive bandages
  • Two (2) one-inch and two (2) two-inch gauze bandage rolls (or equivalent)
  • Two (2) triangular bandages

  • One (1) laminated copy of "Bloodborne Pathogen Instructions for Multnomah County Employees"

In addition, every location should have at least one (1) Body Fluid Clean-up Kit, also available from Multco Marketplace.  In situations where body-fluid clean-up involves more than using nitrile gloves and a few paper towels, staff should cordon off the area and contact Facilities Dispatch at 503.988.3779 to request a special cleaning or to give the janitorial staff a heads up if it is close to closing.
