Policy
The library has six safety committees—plus one joint County safety committee—that help in establishing and maintaining a safe environment for staff and patrons.
Rationale
The library’s safety committees exist to maintain the interest of both management and staff in occupational safety and health matters and to maintain a safe work environment. They are also here to provide an opportunity for open discussion of problems that resulted—or could result—in workplace injury or illness, and to assist staff and management in recommending improvements to the work environment. The library’s safety committees meet the OR-OSHA requirements for regular safety committee meetings.
Application
The library has seven safety committees attached to it:
- Central Library Regional Safety Committee
- East County Regional Safety Committee
- EHS / LAL / Tobacco Safety Committee
- Mid County Regional Safety Committee
- North / Northeast County Regional Safety Committee
- Operations Safety Committee
- West / South County Regional Safety Committee
Each committee consists of represented and management staff members, including the committee chair (or co-chairs), staff representation from each locations, management representation, a Library Facilities representative, and a County Risk Management representative. A Safety Committee Coordination Team also meets on a quarterly basis to help guide the work of the safety committees.
Procedure
Each safety committee:
- Meets monthly
- Selects a chair for a term of one year by majority vote; selection of a co-chair is optional
- Maintains and posts minutes in accordance with OR-OSHA guidelines to the shared drive, which is linked on each committees’ library commons page
- Performs required quarterly safety inspections and drills
- Acts in advisory capacity, making safety and health recommendations to share with management for review, discussion, and response
- Completes an annual evaluation of its activities, successes, and challenges
