Policy
Library staff will follow established procedures when observing a robbery or becoming aware of theft of library or personal property. The safety of customers and staff is always the primary concern.
Procedure
If you are being robbed, cooperate with the robber. The safety of everyone involved is of greatest concern.
When observing an incident of theft or attempted theft:
- Call the police at 9-911. Report the incident, giving your name, location and telephone number.
- Pay attention to the suspect's appearance. Try to remember or make notes on their clothing, hair, skin color, gender, jewelry, glasses--anything that can help to identify them.
- Make brief notes including the time and date of the incident, suspect's description, actions, location, etc. If a victim is involved in the incident, include a description of them.
- Do not attempt to apprehend the suspect.
- As soon as possible, report the incident to a supervisor, and on the Security or Incidents Log.
When staff become aware of stolen equipment or property after the fact:
Follow the procedures outlined in Break-ins, Burglaries, Vandalism in this manual.
