Critical incident response procedures

Definition

A critical incident is a legal term and should be used only to define incidents meeting the following criteria:

  • Occurs on library property or is directly associated with someone’s role at the library.
  • Involves one or more of the following elements:
    • An attempt to physically harm a library employee, volunteer, or vendor.
    • An actual threat of immediate physical violence directed toward a library employee, volunteer, or vendor.
      • An “actual” threat is one made in the time and can be immediately carried out; whereas an “implied” threat is made to intimidate and non-specific over the course of action.
    • Sexual misconduct directed toward a library employee, volunteer, or vendor.
    • When an active threat is occurring. An active threat is a security-related evacuation or lockdown that is not a drill.
