Lucky Day collection

November 2025

Quick Facts

  • Lucky Day books are a high-demand browsing collection of popular titles.
    • Multiple copies of new titles for the Lucky Day collection are purchased weekly.
    • Lucky Day items can be searched in Symphony and are cataloged on the same records as other circulating copies.
  • A patron can have up to two Lucky Day items at a time.
    • Lucky day items may not be renewed.
    • If the patron has a title on hold and checks out a Lucky Day copy of that title, the hold will be filled on the patron’s record. Lucky Day items will not fill holds at check in.
  • Lucky Day copies can be considered for weeding if they are worn, not circulating well and have been in the collection for at least 6 months (juvenile) or 12 months (adult).  Do not discard Lucky Day items for age if there’s still a long holds list for the title.
  • IMMS should keep the right amount of items on your Lucky Day shelves. If you have too many/too few Lucky Day items at your location, contact your regional librarian.

Application

Check out

  • Lucky Day items are identified by a large orange wraparound label and are shelved separately in a special display area
  • Each patron may have a maximum of two Lucky Day items checked out at one time. The limit in Symphony is set at four so patrons can put two Lucky Day items in the bookdrop and check out two more right away. See Checkout Limits.
  • Staff may check these items out from the public shelves, like any patron of the library. Staff may not have special access to these titles.
  • Lucky Day items do not renew. They can be re-checked out if there are other copies of the title on the shelf at your location. This must be done by staff.

Check in and IMMS

  • When checked in, Lucky Day items will not fill holds.
  • Lucky day items will never be shelved at OPS; IMMS will always send them to a branch.
  • IMMS may route a Lucky Day item to a different branch.
  • Lucky Day items may be selected for a Rotation Picklist via the IMMS device if your location has many copies on the shelf that are not circulating well.

Holds

  • If the patron has a title on hold, including a suspended hold, a Lucky Day copy of the title will fill the hold when it is checked out to them.
  • Lucky Day items will not be on holds pick lists or fill holds at check in.
  • Staff will not do shelf checks at other locations for Lucky Day items or hold them aside for patrons to pick up.

Searching

  • Lucky Day items can be searched in Symphony and are cataloged on the same records as other circulating copies.
  • Lucky Day items will not display in My MCL. Staff will need to look in Symphony to see whether Lucky Day copies are available at a location.
  • Lucky Day items have a call number of LUCKY DAY
  • Lucky Day item types include LDB - Lucky Day Book, such as LDB-J-F.

Maintaining and weeding the Lucky Day collection

  • IMMS should keep the right amount of items on your Lucky Day shelves.
    • If you have too few Lucky Day items at your location, perform an inventory to mark items missing. IMMS will then refill your shelves.
    • If you have too many copies of a Lucky Day item at your location, either check them in to see if IMMS reroutes them, or choose “Send to Central Sorting” on the IMMS device, scan the excess copies and send them to OPS for sorting.
    • If the amount of Lucky Day items consistently does not match available shelf space, contact your Regional Librarian.
  • Items that show signs of wear or damage should be discarded for condition
  • Lucky Day items have the date added stamped on the label. Lucky Day titles/items that have been in the collection for more than 6 months for juvenile/teen titles and 12 months for adult titles may be weeded to keep the collection current, but only if they are no longer circulating well. Don’t weed Lucky Day copies if the title still has a long holds list, no matter how old they are.
  • All age weeding is done at locations, not OPS/the Sort Center.
  • Lucky Day items are assumed to have received high use and to be ready to retire after patron demand has diminished. Withdrawn Lucky Day items are not added to the circulating collection for this reason.

Policy

The Lucky Day collection consists of popular high-demand items that are available for browsing only.

Each patron may have two Lucky Day items checked out at one time. The loan period is usually three weeks, or six weeks for some user profiles, with no renewals.

If a patron wants to keep a Lucky Day item and there are other copies of that title available on the shelf, staff may recheck the item out immediately to the same patron. If no other copies are available, the item should be checked in and shelved so that other patrons may have their turn. If it cannot be rechecked out immediately, staff can offer to place a hold on the item or see if it is available as an e-book .

If the patron has a title on hold, a Lucky Day copy of the title will fill the hold when it is checked out to them.

Patrons cannot place holds on Lucky Day items. Lucky Day items will not fill holds at check in and will not be on holds pick lists.

Staff may not call for shelf checks or holds on these items.

Lucky Day is a Shared collection. Staff at all locations should monitor their Lucky Day copies for condition and discard worn copies.

Rationale

The goal of the Lucky Day collection is for patrons to be able to find high-demand items on the shelf without placing holds. The Lucky Day collection is designed to be a low effort, high impact collection that provides quick access to current titles. Lucky Day items may not be renewed and are not immediately checked out to the same patron unless other copies of that title are available, so that more people have access to this browsing collection.
