Policy
In case of a chemical or other toxic contamination, immediate action should be taken. The supervisor or person in charge should evacuate the staff and customers in a safe and orderly manner.
Procedure
The supervisor or person in charge (PIC) should do the following:
- Call 9-911. Evacuate the area.
- The supervisor or PIC should carefully investigate the nature and extent of the contamination. Avoid unwarranted exposure to any dangerous toxicant.
- The supervisor or the PIC should advise the Fire Bureau Emergency Response Team of the extent of the contamination and other pertinent information. Individuals with knowledge of the situation should remain in order to update the emergency personnel.
- If there are contaminated individuals, the supervisor should identify and isolate them. First aid trained employees should be summoned until the medics arrive.
- If the supervisor or PIC thinks evacuation is needed, the occupants should follow the standard emergency evacuation procedures. If an evacuation is necessary, employees should assist in keeping customers out of the way of the emergency response team.
- The supervisor or PIC will notify the proper authorities, including Facilities at 503.988.3779, and Risk Management, 503.988.3736.
- Re-entry into the contaminated area should occur only after the emergency response personnel authorize it.
