Policy
Because earthquakes occur without warning and are potentially very damaging, this policy should be reviewed by all staff to prepare them to respond constructively and protectively.
Procedure
- Stay calm. Do not run or panic.
- If you are already indoors, remain in the building, as close to the center of the building as possible.
- Drop, cover, and hold. Take cover under a cubical desk, heavy freestanding desk, table, bench, supported doorway or other protected area. Hold on to the desk or table leg if possible. In an open area, cover your head with your arms. Press your face against your arm to protect your eyes until the shaking stops.
- Stay away from windows, outside doors, or bookcases. Come out from between bookstacks.
- Do not run through or near areas where there is danger of falling debris.
- Know the location of flashlights. Do not use candles, matches or other open flame, either during or after a tremor, because of possible gas leaks.
- Do not use elevators; use the stairs.
- Douse all fires.
- After the shaking ends, evacuate the building. Wait for word from the supervisor or person in charge (PIC) to re-enter the building.
- Beware of aftershocks.
- If you are outdoors, stay outdoors.
- Move away from buildings and utility wires. Drop to the ground, cover your head with your arms and wait for the shaking to stop.
- The greatest danger is from falling debris just outside doorways and close to the outer wall.
- If you are in a vehicle, pull to the side of the road and stop.
- Do not stop on or under bridges or overpasses, nor under power lines, or large roadway signs that might fall.
- Stay in your vehicle until the earthquake is over.
- When you drive on, and if the earthquake has been severe, do not attempt to cross bridges or overpasses that have been damaged.
- Watch for fallen or falling objects and downed electric wires.
- Listen for emergency instructions on the radio or through other authorities.
