Floods

Policy

In case of a major flood, staff in all agencies should follow established procedures to ensure the safety of the staff and protection of library facilities and equipment.

Application

This procedure applies where flooding occurs that necessitates evacuation of the facility. If minor flooding occurs that does NOT require evacuation, call Facilities Management at 988.3322.

Procedure

Flood Conditions:

If it has been raining hard for several hours, or steadily raining for several days, be alert to the possibility of a flood.

  1. Listen to local radio or television stations and web sites for flood information.
  2. Check your fax machines for bulletins from the county's Emergency Management Division.
Note: A flood WATCH means a flood is possible in your area. A flood WARNING means a flash flood is occurring or will occur very soon.
  3. Notify the branch supervisor or person in charge. At Central, also notify the LSL at 503.969.2921.

Evacuation

If evacuation of the library facility is necessary:

  1. Determine where you should go--it should be a place that does not have the potential for flooding.
  2. Move furniture and equipment to a higher floor if one exists and if time allows.

Once Out of the Building:

  1. Move to higher ground away from rivers, streams, creeks and storm drains.
  2. Do not drive around barricades; they are there for your safety.
  3. If your car stalls in rapidly rising waters, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.
  4. Once Back in the Library Building, contact County Risk Management Office so they can assess the damage.
