Reporting stolen loaner laptops and other devices

Created: February 3, 2012 (revised April 15, 2015)

  1. Identify the device by device name, make/model, home location, and serial number. It is a good idea to keep a log of this information for each of your laptops. If you have trouble identifying the make/model or serial number, check with Jon Worona.
  2. Gather related records.
    1. Signed patron loan agreement, if available.
    2. Patron name, birth date, and address.
    3. Date and time the device was loaned.
    4. Security tape, if available. (Check with Lisa Canavan or Dan Swerbilov)
    5. Any additional identifying information, if available.
  3. Report theft to the police, except for patron-loaner Chromebooks.
    1. When we report a crime against the library to the police, we will provide any patron information that is directly relevant to the crime: name, birth date, address, photographs, and information about the transaction that resulted in theft -- but no additional loan or transaction history.
    2. Get a police report number and a contact number.
  4. Follow up with Library management, IT, County Risk Management, etc.
    1. Create and send a Library Security Incident Log.
    2. Modify the patron's Symphony record per the Circulation Manual
    3. Send a report to the Helpdesk at ithelpdesk@multco.us, including the police report number as appropriate. They will create a support ticket.
    4. If the device needs to be replaced, submit a request through Jon Worona.
    5. If the item is not returned in good condition within two weeks, file a theft report with County Risk Management.
    6. If a security tape becomes available, submit it to the police.
