User Profiles/patron types

The hold limit for Libby/OverDrive, and checkout limits for Hoopla and Kanopy, changed July 1, 2025. See this Circ Alert email for details.

November 2025

Quick Facts

  • User profiles determine the loan rules for checkouts, loan periods, holds and other services. The loan rules are set by address, age, and levels of service.
  • Youth profiles such as 1_MULT_Y are for patrons ages 12 and younger. Youth profiles are changed to adult automatically when patrons turn 13.
  • 4_EDU and Accommodation user profiles allow more or fewer borrowing and hold privileges.
  • 5_UPDATE is assigned when contact information needs to updated.
  • EXCLUDED allows no services. An alert will pop up when accounts with this profile are opened in Check Out.
  • BLOCKED is an account status based on fees over $50, not a user profile.
  • IMPORTANT: If the patron does not volunteer or agree to change their user profile to A_1_ITEM or A_5_ITEM, which will limit the number of items they can check out at one time, staff must consult with a PIC, supervisor, lead worker, or Contact Center staff before limiting use of the library.

Policy

User profiles are assigned to accounts according to the needs and address of the patron. They set what services patrons may use and rules such as loan periods, number of items that can be checked out and the number of holds that can be placed at one time.

If the patron does not volunteer or agree to change their user profile to A_1_ITEM or A_5_ITEM, which will limit the number of items they can check out at one time, staff must consult with a PIC, supervisor, lead worker, or Contact Center staff before limiting use of the library.

Staff and volunteers at the library, may be assigned a user profile of 0_MULT if they live outside Multnomah County, so they can use all library services.
