Policy
During a power failure, staff should proceed as they would during computer downtime. In in case of darkness, the power failure may necessitate closing the library facility early.
Procedure
All locations
- Look outside the building to determine if it's the neighborhood or just the building.
- Check-out for customers will be done with flashlights and Symphony off-line circ procedures. Then if it is dark outside, for safety purposes, begin clearing patrons from the building.
- Every branch and section should have working flashlights. The location of flashlights should be well known to staff members.
- Supervisors should have flashlights checked every three months to be sure batteries are not run down and that flashlights work.
- Do not use candles under any circumstances.

Branches
- Report outage to Facilities Dispatch at 503.988.3779.
- If it is dark outside, for safety purposes, clear patrons from the building. And contact your supervisor, regional manager or EMT PIC
- If outage occurs during weekday hours, inform the Library Facilities staff about the power outage. On weekends and afterhours, contact Facilities Dispatch and the EMT PIC - 503-201-0522
- Depending on how long the power has been off, the security alarm may be able to be set while the power is off. If not, contact Facilities Dispatch.
- Staff should wait for instructions from their supervisor or the Person in Charge (PIC).
Administration
- The person in charge should call Facilities at 503.988.3779.
