Power failure

Policy

During a power failure, staff should proceed as they would during computer downtime. In in case of darkness, the power failure may necessitate closing the library facility early.

Procedure

All locations

  1. Look outside the building to determine if it's the neighborhood or just the building.
  2. Check-out for customers will be done with flashlights and Symphony off-line circ procedures. Then if it is dark outside, for safety purposes, begin clearing patrons from the building.
  3. Every branch and section should have working flashlights. The location of flashlights should be well known to staff members.
  4. Supervisors should have flashlights checked every three months to be sure batteries are not run down and that flashlights work.
  5. Do not use candles under any circumstances.
  6. Should the power failure necessitate closing the facility early, see Emergency Closure/Change in Library Hours in this manual.
